What is Shiatsu?

The principles of Shiatsu are rooted in the traditions of oriental medicine using energy channels and points as used in acupuncture. Treatments involve a diagnosis followed by a full body treatment, done through loose clothing, using pressure techniques and stretches to harmonise the energy of the body.
The practitioner works on the body to help energy flow freely through the whole system, to stimulate the body’s own innate ability to rebalance and heal itself. During the treatment this is usually experienced as a sense of deep relaxation.
Shiatsu involves applying pressure to the body using a practitioner’s thumbs, palms, elbows, knees and feet. Pressure can be gentle or firm, depending on the condition being treated.

Treatment may also include the use of flowing stretches and gentle rotations of the limbs and joints, simple structural alignments and muscle release techniques. On a physical level this has the effect of stimulating circulation and the flow of lymphatic fluid. It also works on the autonomic nervous system; helps to release toxins and deep-seated tension from the muscles, and can also stimulate the hormonal system. On a subtler level shiatsu allows the receiver to deeply relax, stimulating the body’s inherent ability for self healing and regeneration.
Like most natural therapies, shiatsu is based on the assumption that the body is a self-healing organism, and that the role of the practitioner is to aid and support that naturally occurring process. Shiatsu can assist an individual with their self-development and self-healing; treating the underlying causes of a condition and addressing physical and psychological functions; promoting health and strengthening the body’s own healing abilities.
Shiatsu can aid you with the following conditions and ailments:
Depression
Mental Health Issues
Arthritis
Back Pain
Insomnia
Stress
Hormonal Imbalance
Digestive Problems
Low Spirits and Tiredness
With experience treating elderly and disabled people, I believe strongly that despite physical limitations and mobility problems sessions can be helpful to a patient. Over the years I have gained experience supporting people who are terminally ill, with whom treatments can be adapted to the individual’s needs and circumstances. Children can also be helped enormously, shorter sessions may be recommended depending on the age of the child and condition being treated.
